A Miracle That Humbled & Inspired Everyone!

Five and a half years ago a guy hobbled into my martial arts studio on a cane; he looked really torn up by life!!

Turns out he was becoming paralyzed on one side of his face, he was losing his hearing, his eyesight and even his ability to walk! Unfortunately he had recently been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. (MS affects the ability of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to communicate with each other).

Obviously the illness had already taken quite a toll on his body. It was bad… BUT there was a miracle waiting to happen. Underneath this guy’s beat up body and compromised nervous system there was an inner drive to conquer his fate!

This is one of those truly miraculous stories. It’s about an unbelievable transformation. One that has shocked the doctors, shocked our students and shocked the community!

Tommy Shultz walked into my office off the street and told me he wanted to become a fighter!! My jaw just about dropped when he said that – I mean really? He was using a cane, limping and really messed up by MS.

But I quickly re-centered and remembered how the doctors had told me, when I had my crippling back injury, that it would prevent me from ever doing martial arts again (different story for a different day). I spent 5 years figuring out how to prove them wrong, and I did! I reminded myself that ANYTHING is possible in life, if you stay open and do your part. If I could heal my back, get my life back and build another Dojo, then transformation was possible for Tommy also.

Perhaps that is what attracted us to taking an amazing journey together? I knew what he was going through. I knew what it was like to not be able to walk, to train, to feel capable. It hurts you emotionally WAY more than it hurts you physically. Perhaps you can relate?

Anyway, let me jump back to the meeting in my office. Tommy told me all about his illness, about how his girlfriend had stuck with him through some really horrible days — her name is Blanche — she is actually an angel, but don’t tell any one :) He said that martial arts was the ONE thing – that he used to have – that made him feel alive and happy. He wanted that back!!

The only caveat that I had was he said he wanted to be a “fighter”. I love the martial arts, fighting is a part of that, but it’s not the whole kit and caboodle. I have always had the expectation for my students that they will far exceed being just fighters, they will become powerful, peaceful warriors. So I told Tommy if he was willing to do the mental part of my method (Satori Method) as well as the fighting, then I would teach him how to fight. He agreed. I signed him up for classes that night.

Little by little I introduced him to a special formula… one I had discovered to help overcome my crippling back injury. It didn’t include stretches or fighting, at first… it was mostly mental training. We began with meditation and removing stress-related thoughts. We changed his language patterns and added new ways of speaking to his subconscious mind (the place where ALL your power and healing potential lies). We started using affirmations and visualizations, seeing himself capable and strong – kicking again, punching, falling – and affirming a new way of thinking – one with endless possibilities.

I also taught Tommy an ancient Chinese martial art called Qigong, which strengthens the body and speeds up healing, like acupuncture. As the years went by we combined and ingrained all of these inner strengthening methods with his physical training – but the mental training was the core foundation.

So let’s jump forwards, five and half years later…

Tommy trained his butt off every single day, putting his whole heart into every class. As of July, 17th 2010 he will have attended over 800 classes!! Through these dedicated efforts he has learned how to master his mind, body and spirit and he has COMPLETELY overcome his disability!!

Tommy threw away his cane and is testing for his Black Belt TOMORROW!!!

If you live in Austin you are invited to watch one of the most spectacular experiences ever – not only is a Black Belt test physically more challenging than almost any other physical endeavor in the world – but to take this test after being sentenced to life in a wheelchair (yep, that’s what the docs told him to expect), well, that is a true miracle!

The truth is all the credit goes to Tommy and the Formula I mentioned. Transformation takes place when we leave our fears and doubts in the dust. It requires consistency, mental dedication and the G.O.Y.A. method (get off your *ss). The Formula transforms you in a powerful way, from the inside out — and then becomes manifest in the physical world, (like being able to go through a Black Belt test). But you have to take action to make it work for you.

I’m honored to have helped Tommy get to this point; I am humbled by what dedication and application can do in someone’s life. I am also extremely privileged to have been teaching in Austin for close to 20 years now… and I am overjoyed to share people’s amazing accomplishments. It is through the example of others that we are inspired to grow and achieve our dreams as well.

Here’s to your transformation and dreams :)
